Following Levinson (2010), we assume that adjectives in such sentences are cases of root modification, in which the root √speak is modified by the adjective clear before being categorized as a verb. This is possible when roots have entities as part of their meaning. Following our theoretical approach, we contrast cases of root modification with cases of modification of categorized constituents.Neste artigo, analisamos um subtipo de modificação adjetival dentro do sintagma verbal, exemplificado por sentenças como Ela falou claro. Mostramos como trabalhos prévios sobre o fenômeno, em especial Lobato (2008) e Leung (2007), contêm importantes intuições para que o papel do adjetivo no sintagma verbal seja compreendido, mas carecem de elementos centrais para formalizar o fenômeno. Assumimos, então, com Levinson (2010), que adjetivos em sentenças como Ela falou claro são casos de modificação de raiz, em que a raiz √fal- é modificada pelo adjetivo antes de ser categorizada como um verbo. Isso é possível quando as raízes têm um componente de entidade como parte de seu significado.
