Sumario:This article makes an analysis of two general dictionaries recently published: Dicionário HOUAISS da Língua Portuguesa (2001) and the last edition (2000) of AURÉLIO Século XXI dictionary. Primarily I examined the theoretical basis of these works and the flaws concerning concepts and methods of Lexical Theory: I also indicate the need for dictionaries to be based on texts that were actually printed or produced. The wide-ranging and representativity of lexicon registered in these dictionaries and the criteria for choosing word-entries are analysed, as well as the treatment applied to the articles of these dictionaries.
