Sumario:The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between common mental disorders and functional capacity in elderly residents of the city of Alcobaça, state of Bahia. It is an observational, analytical study with a cross - sectional design using the database of the ELSIA - Longitudinal Study of the Elderly Health of Alcobaça, Bahia. Data were collected individually through a questionnaire containing sociodemographic questions, clinical and health indicators, behavioral and functional capacity. Mental Disorders were evaluated using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), with a cut-off of five or more positive responses. Descriptive statistics (frequency, standard deviation and mean), chi-square test (comparison of the sociodemographic, health, and clinical, behavioral variables, and functional capacity according to common mental disorders), Poisson logistic regression models p≤0.05 and, finally, Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves to verify the values of sensitivity and specificity, in the respective discriminant criterion of the functional capacity for the indicative of Common mental disorders. The prevalence of common mental disorders was 37.2% for both sexes. After the adjusted analysis the variables gender, health perception, nervous system diseases and functional capacity were those that presented a higher prevalence of Common mental disorders. And through the ROC curve, functional capacity was shown to be a potential predictor for Common mental disorders. The findings in the present study contribute to prevention and intervention strategies for the elderly. Besides stimulating new studies related to this subject.
