Descripción
Sumario:This paper investigates the grammaticalization of three causal connectives formed by a lexical-grammatical base associated with the item que: já que, posto que and visto que. To this end, it is aligned to a functionalist perspective of analysis, which, based on the relationships between structure and linguistic uses, conceives grammar as a variable and emergent system. Based on data collected from a longitudinal sample, it identifies the main mechanisms performed in the grammaticalization of the connectives in question, namely reanalysis, analogy, metaphor and metonymy. The analyses indicate complementary relationships among these mechanisms, which, in the case of the elements under investigation, operate both at a formal and a semantic dimension, corroborating thus the complex nature of grammaticalization processes.
