Resumo:Our aim in this paper is to present the three main types of dictionaries used by the Brazilian learners of English and verify what kind of information is provided by these reference works to help the learners with text comprehension and production. We start discussing the dichotomy ‘bilingual active dictionary’ versus ‘bilingual passive dictionary’. In the following, we distinguish the ‘semasiological dictionaries’ (which bring definitions) –  from the ‘onomasiological’ ones (which show the various words that can be used to express a given concept). And, eventually, we examine the semibilingual dictionaries (which bring definitions in English and equivalents in Portuguese).
