| Sumario: | The traira (Hoplias malabaricus) is a carnivorous, predatory fish of preferentially nocturnal habit, widespread in South America, found in freshwater environments. It is used as a food source by fish-eating birds and also by mammals, including man. Mainly due to their eating habits, this is a species that acts as an important definitive, intermediate and paratenic host of helminthes, standing out nematode larvae. In order to assess the prevalence of parasitic nematode load present in fishes intended for human consumption, this study aimed both to quantify and determine the occurrence of parasitic load in H. malabaricus in Furnas Lake, Minas Gerais. The collections and processing of the fishes were performed according to the literature and the statistical analysis done by the SAS / STAT 7.1 software. From the results obtained, it follows that out of the 52 fishes sampled, the organ with the highest frequency of parasites was the general cavity with a mean and a standard deviation of 53.8 ± 39.1 parasites / organ, followed by the pyloric ceca with 5.6 ± 6.6, intestine with 3.9 +- 4,8 and stomach with 5.2 to 2.6. The highest frequency of parasites in the general cavity can increase the risk of occurrence of cysts in the musculature, its being able to represent an important route of zoonosis to man. As regards the pancreas, liver, bladder and kidney, the means of parasite per organ were 0.2, 0.1, 0.1 and 0.0 respectively, representing isolated cases of infestation. Concerning the influence exercised between fish size and parasite load, it was possible to conclude that the size did not influence the levels of parasitism, where the found parasites were represented by the genera Contracaecum sp1, Contracaecum sp2, Hysterothylacium sp and Goezia sp. Despite the negative results for cysts in the musculature, H. malabaricus of Furnas lake may pose risks of infection in human beings. |
