| Sumario: | The first serological survey of leptospirosis was carried out in a few islands close to the southern Atlantic shore of the state of São Paulo. Communications with the mainland were scanty and the communities surveyed lived under very poor economic and sanitary conditíons. Thirty five per cent aí the estimated population was su rveyed for leptospirosís soroagglutination tests. Twenty three standard serotype antigens were included in the tests which yielded 7.4% of positive results. Serotype panama was found to be the predominant strain. There was no sex or age predominance. Comparison with leptospirosis surveys made in other areas of Brazil showed the importance of the problem in those islands. |
