| Summary: | The Social Deprivation Index (IPS) is a quantitative instrument, prepared from secondary data, with the objective of identifying the social conditions of a given territory. For Santa Maria, a city located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), a deprivation index was elaborated, in order to reveal the socio-spatial inequalities present in its urban area. In addition to its use as a policy and planning instrument, the IPS can also be used as a pedagogical tool. In this sense, the main objective of this work is to demonstrate the possibility of using the IPS of Santa Maria, RS, in Geography classes in Elementary and High School, in order to help students understand content that explains the conditions socio-spatial aspects of the urban area of the municipality. Examples are the themes of urban poverty, social inequalities and segregation, guided by the National Curricular Common Base (BNCC), to be addressed in Geography classes. As results presented, we demonstrate that, although it has not yet been applied in the classroom, the IPS is a powerful tool in addressing issues such as urban poverty and socio-spatial inequalities, in their different aspects, such as segregation. In addition, the use of IPS cartography allows students residing in Santa Maria, RS, to recognize the conditions and variations in the uses of the territory, thus contributing to the apprehension of the socio-spatial reality of the city. |
