Sumario:Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), is an auxiliary diagnostic method which perform cytopathological analysis of morphological alterations in isolated cells obtained through introduction of a needle, with rocking gentle movements, in order to achieve desquamation and aspiration of as much as possible cells back from the lesion. The main indication for oral and maxillofacial FNAB is for the diagnosis of lesions characterized as abnormal tissue masses localized in submucosal, subcutaneous and intraosseous areas and which can be palpable or observable through imaging techniques. Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of fine-needle aspiration biopsy through comparative study between cytopathological and histopathological diagnosis and propose indications for FNAB utilization in lesions involving oral and maxillofacial region. Materials and Methods: We selected for this study 70 patients samples with cytopathological and histopathological diagnosis from the Anatomical Pathology Service of Antônio Pedro University Hospital, between January 2000 and November 2005. Results: From the 70 initially selected cases, twelve (17%), did not contain enough material for cytopathological analysis, remaining this way, 58 cases with sufficient material. Among these cases, 49 demonstrated coincidence between cytopathological and histopathological diagnosis which corresponded to a diagnostic accuracy of 84,5%. Conclusion: FNAB is a simple low-cust technique which poses little morbidity for the patient besides it is an effective auxiliary method for the diagnosis of lesions affecting oral and maxillofacial region, mostly to differentiate if they are either neoplastic/inflammatory or benign/malign.
