Description
Summary:The environmental problems caused by the indiscriminate use of natural resources are increasingly evident and result in losses of both natural and social nature. Therefore, It’s needed to create mechanisms that minimize and / or solve the problems caused by the use of those resources, in which environmental planning studies are an instrument to be used in this process. The watershed, in turn, has been adopted as a basic planning unit, due to its systemic character that allows an integrated analysis of the elements it composes. In order to provide theoretical and methodological bases for environmental planning in watershed, the studies accomplished in the light of the Geoecology of Landscape are quite efficient, through the integrated analysis of the relationship between society and nature. In this context, the present research aimed to delimit the geoecological units of the Upper Course of the Potengi-RN watershed (ACBHRP-RN), which is mainly inserted in the administrative limits of the cities: Cerro Corá/RN, São Tomé/RN and Barcelona/RN. In recent years, new economic activities have been established in this part of the basin, a factor that highlights the need for studies that analyze local environmental conditions and indicate efficient ways of using available natural resources. The methodology was divided into four steps, based on the geoecological foundations, which are: organization and event, analysis and association of data, diagnosis and propositions. To this end, the data about the physical, environmental and socioeconomic aspects of the study area were gathered and guided from the elaboration of charts, tables, graphs and cartographic products on a scale of 1:250,000. The results of the analyzes evaluated the delimitation of the geoecological units of the ACBHRP-RN: Depression with Agricultural Use, Western Slopes of Borborema with Sources, Eastern Slopes of Borborema with Strongly Wavy Relief, Eastern Slopes of Borborema / Cidade de Pedras, Wind Plateaus, Plateaus for Agricultural and Mining Use, Fluvial Plain / APP; Serra de Santana / Source Areas and Polênga River Valley. Subsequently, they were affected as potentialities and limitations related to use of the soil in each geoecological unit, in addition to the proposition of integrated actions for use in environmental planning projects by the social groups which work in the study area. It is hoped that the techniques used, the materials obtained and the proposals made during the dissipated research can contribute to a better use of the available natural resources, in order to guarantee the balance between environmental quality and social development, besides serving as a reference for future auxiliary works involving environmental planning in watersheds according to the Geocology of Landscape.
