Resumo:This article aims to verify the definitions of the term lockdown in three city hall decrees in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) to verify biopolitical and governmentality implications raised by the use of the term in facing the new coronavirus pandemic. The theoretical contribution is based on Foucault (2008a, 2008b, 2010, Agamben (2010) and (1999, 2003). It is a descriptive-interpretive study of the research corpus, consisting of decrees from municipal executives in RN. It was possible to observe that the definitions of lockdown are not understandable, thus revealing a communicative failure of the government in the exercise of power over life.
