Resumo:This paper aims to analyze the process of patrimonialization of former immigrant reception centers, especially the Hospedaria da Ilha das Flores. Founded by the imperial government in 1883 on a small archipelago in Guanabara Bay, near the Neves neighborhood in São Gonçalo, the Hospedaria was an important reception facility for immigrants arriving in Brazil via the Port of Rio de Janeiro. Around 700.000 people passed through the institution until it closed in 1966. Currently, the intensification of migratory movements has sparked discussions about the impacts that the diaspora has caused. In this context, spaces that once welcomed immigrants have been converted into “places of memory”. The creation of the Immigration Museum of Ilha das Flores takes place in this scenario, in which it is urgent to promote the debate on population displacements. This study is based on projects and reports from the Immigration Memory Center of Ilha das Flores and interviews with the project’s management team.
