Resumo:Subject indexing is responsible for representing the content of information resources, so that it can be retrieved by users in an information retrieval system. The present work presents the importance of indexing in the search engine ranking process and aims to verify how the elements of indexing theory and practice can contribute to information retrieval. The research seeks to identify whether Search Engine Optimization techniques are close to the elements of subject indexing. Considering the lack of investigations dedicated to the dialogue between the two themes, the literature review was used as a methodology, in order to contextualize the current research scenario on both themes. The results indicate few works that approach the themes of Search Engine Optimization and Indexing together. It is concluded that there is an integration between indexing practices and Search Engine Optimization techniques, and it is described which elements of indexing can contribute to ranking in the search engine.
