Sumario:This study seeks to address the means of theatricalisation of the novel Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma (published in English as The Patriot and also as The Sad End of Policarpo Quaresma) by Lima Barreto, as used by the Brazilian stage director Antunes Filho for his theatre adaptation that was performed to the public in 2010. The analysis of this creative process intends to look into the way in which literature-derived dramaturgy was developed as well as how the transposition of languages was arranged, through the eyes of the artist, and thus this research attempts to understand the stage director's personal take on the novel in question. To this end, the researcher found it suitable to give the research a wider scope, turning to the stage director's oeuvre in order to more thoroughly comprehend the constitution of the artist's creative process. The choice of Antunes Filho's play as the subject of this study is due to the fact of it being the adaptation of a literary source transposed to the stage, which is a procedure that corresponds to one of the characteristic approaches of contemporary theatre
