Description
Summary:After a preliminary introduction on the general problem of the treatment of the cancer of the breast the author presents the data of the Nacional Institute of Cancer of Milan where, over the past twenty years, 850 pacients were subjected to enlarged mastectomy. A new type of surgical procedure (superradical mastectomy) was the treatment done in 40 patients as a attempt to find out what surgery can offer in this field when pushed to the limit of its possibilities. This operation involves no higher mortality or morbidity than is the case with conventional radical mastectomy and the esthetic and functional impairment is limited. There is no alternative but to conduct an exhaustive clinical trial to evaluate the long-terme survival.
