Sumario:In the Cerrado biome lies the main agricultural frontier of Brazil today, known as the MATOPIBA region, which includes parts of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia. In Maranhão, the municipality of Balsas is the state’s largest agricultural producer. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the spatio-temporal dynamics of land use and occupation changes in the southern region of the municipality of Balsas - MA, using orbital remote sensing and spatial analysis in the years 2013 and 2023. Remote sensing tools were used, including the Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin for preprocessing and supervised classification and AcATaMA for classification accuracy assessment. Landsat-8 satellite images and polygon editing tools in QGIS 3.26.2 software were used for the classification. The analysis showed satisfactory global accuracy levels for the years 2013 and 2023. The areas of the “Dense Forest” and “Sparse Forest” classes increased by 0.24%, while the “Non-Forest Area” class decreased by 37%. Notably, areas designated for agriculture and livestock showed significant growth of 47.1%. According to the image analyses for the years 2013 and 2023, there was an expansion of the “Agricultural Area” class and a reduction in the “Non-Forest Area” class, indicating an increase in agricultural activities in the municipality of Balsas.
