| Sumario: | In this article, we present a reflection about the appropriation of the rhetorical ethos by discourse analysis, claiming certain enunciative characteristics of this notion in the process of adaptation to a contemporary theory. From Amossy (2005 [1999]), Haddad (2005 [1999]) and Maingueneau (2005 [1999]), we discuss the related notions of ethos: anti-ethos, incorporation of ethos, previous and pre-discursive ethos. Thus, based on Maingueneau's theoretical framework (1997 [1987]; 2005 [1999]; 2008), Alexandrescu's (1976) studies on epistemic modalities and Bakhtin/Volochinov's (2002) postulates on quoted discourse, we analyzed the discursive ethos built on the pronouncement of Deputy Geraldo Freire (ARENA/MG), leader of the government in the Chamber of Deputies during the deliberative session of December 12, 1968, whose vote marked the history of Brazilian politics by becoming the pretext for the regime dictatorial act promulgate Institutional Act nº 5. |
