Summary:Due to transformations of natural surfaces by the urban built form, the most evident change among meteorological variables can be seen through the thermal anomalies near the surface. Many of these differences in air temperature are measured in urban and rural areas, but they are commonly related to urban heat island (UHI), leading to simplification of this phenomenon and the urban landscape. According to Stewart (2011), the universe class for heat island observation is landscape, which is then divided according to properties that influence thermal climate in the canopy layer, namely, surface morphology and land cover. The study by Stewart (2011) provides a consistent basis for classifying urban and rural landscapes through Local Climate Zones (LCZ). The greatest challenge in this process is to organize the surface features (buildings, trees, roads, and soils) into meaningful patterns, and to represent these patterns in a most effective way. The climate zones are suitably detailed to the site properties that influence urban canopy layer climate and the objective of classification is to establish order among phenomena by grouping those with common properties into classes that reveal larger patterns and relations.
