Essa visão foi, sobretudo, reiterada através da escrita de Os Sertões de Euclides da Cunha que perdurou como única e exclusiva até o ano de 1950 quando uma leva de pesquisadores do calibre de Nertan Macedo, Odorico Tavares, José Calasans, dentre outros, resolveram recontar a memória das gentes conselheiristas a partir das vozes silenciadas de seus protagonistas. Contada a partir dessa ótica, vê-se que o repertório concebido por Antônio Vicente Mendes Maciel tornou-se num amplo legado patrimonial articulado no grande Sertão do Conselheiro ¿ faixa geográfica situada no nordeste da Bahia, a qual se estende desde as margens do rio São Francisco até o litoral norte desse Estado. Configurando-se a partir das mais variadas expressões culturais ¿ da arquitetura à escultura, das festas à literatura, o seu bojo artístico constitui-se num verdadeiro tesouro capaz de trazer à baila a memória das gentes camponesas do sertão do Brasil, especialmente aquelas que acompanharam o beato Conselheiro na fase pregressa a fundação do Belo Monte. Lançar luzes sobre essa questão atinente às artes e à cultura do Sertão de Canudos reforça a ideia de que o beato de Quixeramobim não era um "gnóstico bronco" como especificou a obra euclidiana. Pelo que se pode averiguar em sua obra religiosa de cunho material e imaterial, bem como nos livros breviários encontrados nos escombros do arraial conselheirista, constata-se uma certa inclinação de gosto que transitava desde o popular passando pelo híbrido e pelo erudito. Antônio Conselheiro foi um indivíduo afeito ao cristianismo das origens e seguidor extremado das normas propagadas pela Contrarreforma: mortificação do corpo, veneração de relíquias, criação de santuários sagrados, utilização e influência do estilo barroco, dentre outras. Devoto declarado do Bom Jesus, apresentava em suas pregações uma oratória inflamada e de teor místico, cujas bases encontravam ressonância em obras como: o Lunário Perpétuo, as Horas Marianas e a Missão Abreviada. Apontado por diversos estudiosos como o "Anchieta" ou o "Vieira dos sertões", deixou um conjunto de edifícios religiosos cuja gramática ornamental dialogava sobremaneira com os estilos Barroco e Neoclássico. Em seu séquito existiam os mais variados trabalhadores, destacando-se de forma exemplar, os entalhadores, fundidores, mestre de obras, etc., os quais deixaram produções escultóricas de muito boa lavra. As imagens do Bom Jesus, ai presentes, ricas em simbologias, apresentam tipologias próprias, com repertório sincrético, sendo evocadas, na maioria das vezes, na face do Cristo, as feições do beato Conselheiro. Baseado em documentos de cronistas e em pesquisas realizadas em campo, buscou por intermédio de fontes orais e consultas em documentos tais como: cartas, jornais, fotografias, bem como nas páginas jornalísticas, poéticas, etc., divulgar as obras escultóricas, arquitetônicas e culturais do Bom Jesus Conselheiro, de modo a revelar e traduzir esse patrimônio artístico-religioso que se encontra cada vez mais ameaçado, bem como esquecido de estudos mais aprofundados, pois esse é um tema muito importante para escrita de novas páginas da memória do povo brasileiroAbstract: The image of the Conselheiro that was transmitted in the media, portrayed in a humorous way, was one reproduced by a coastal, elitist and republican Brazil. This view was mainly reiterated through the writing of Os Sertões by Euclides da Cunha, which continued to be exclusive until t 1950, when a group of researchers, namely Nertan Macedo, Odorico Tavares and José Calasans, among others, decided to retell the memory of the "Conselheiro people" in the silenced voices of its protagonists. From this point of view, one can see that the repertoire conceived by Antônio Vicente Mendes Maciel constitutes an ample artistic and cultural legacy articulated in the great Sertão of the Conselheiro - a geographic range located in the northeast of Bahia, which extends from the banks of the São Francisco river to the north coast of the State. Configuring the most varied cultural expressions - from architecture to sculpture, from festivals to literature - its artistic core constitutes a true treasure capable of bringing out the memory of the peasant people of the sertão of Brazil, especially those who accompanied the Blessed Conselheiro in the early phase the foundation of Belo Monte. Shedding light on this question concerning the arts and culture of the Sertão de Canudos reinforces the idea that the bequest of Quixeramobim was not a "gnostic bronco" as specified in the Euclidean work. From what can be ascertained in his religious work of a material and immaterial nature, as well as in the breviary books found in the rubble of the councilor's camp, there is a certain inclination of taste that transited from the popular through to the hybrid and the erudite. Antônio Conselheiro was an individual with a strong attachment to Christianity and an extreme follower of the norms propagated by the Counter-Reformation: mortification of the body, veneration of relics, creation of sacred shrines, use and influence of the Baroque style, among others. An avowed devotee of Bom Jesus, he presented in his preaching an inflammatory oratory of mystical content, whose foundations resounded in works such as Lunário Perpétuo, Horas Marianas and Missão Abreviada. Labelled by various scholars as the "Anchieta" or "Vieira dos sertões", he left a group of religious buildings whose ornamental grammar dialogued with the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. In his entourage there were the most varied workers, standing out in an exemplary way, the carvers, founders, master builders, etc., who left sculptural productions of very good fabrication. The images of Bom Jesus, present in them, rich in symbologies, present their own typologies, with a syncretic repertoire, the features of the Blessed Conselheiro being evoked most of the time in the face of Christ.
