| Resumo: | The paper analyzes the labor market in the municipality of São Paulo in the past decade, highlighting how trends in workforce, unemployment, occupational patterns, and income reflect income inequality and poverty. After a historical background tracing the role of labor in the city of São Paulo, it discusses the recent period, based on data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad Contínua) from 2012 to 2023. By doing so, it addresses the main convergences and divergences in terms of job polarization, income distribution, and poverty in the city of São Paulo and for Brazil as a whole, depicting also some dynamics related to the intersectionality of race and gender. Finally, it highlights challenges for municipal management, which require local actions and a national development agenda. |
