description This an exploratory descriptive study conducted in Maringá/PR/BR which aimed to identify the guidance offered to families of newborns in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in perceptions of the nurses themselves. Data were collected from November to December/2009, with 16 nurses working in these units through self-applicable questionnaire consisting of open questions. The results show that nurses recognize that the guidelines are insufficient to meet the needs of families and aim to: reduce anxiety and stress, maintain safety and operation of the service; encourage the mother-child bond and support the family. They focus among other things on the functioning of the sector, regarding the routines and equipment developments in clinical and general condition of the newborn, procedures and nursing care, breastfeeding and emotional support to parents. Communication between nursing staff and family members is essential to have an effective and efficient care.

Os dados foram coletados de novembro a dezembro/2009, com 16 enfermeiros atuantes nestas unidades, por meio de questionário autoaplicável constituído por questões abertas. Os resultados mostram que os enfermeiros reconhecem que as orientações fornecidas são insuficientes para atender as necessidades dos familiares e objetivam: diminuir a ansiedade e estresse, manter a segurança e funcionamento do serviço, encorajar o vinculo mãe e filho, confortar a família. Focam entre outros aspectos, o funcionamento do setor, no que se refere às rotinas e equipamentos, evolução do tratamento clínico e estado geral do recém-nascido, procedimentos e cuidados de enfermagem, aleitamento materno e suporte emocional aos pais. Los datos fueron recolectados de noviembre a diciembre/2009, con 16 enfermeros de estas unidades a través de cuestionario autoaplicable con preguntas abiertas. Los resultados señalaron que los enfermeros reconocen que las directrices no son suficientes para satisfacer las necesidades de las familias y tienen como objetivo: reducir ansiedad, estrés, mantener seguridad, operación del servicio, favorecer el vínculo madre-hijo, consolar a la familia. Se centraron en otros aspectos, como funcionamiento del sector, referente a rutinas y equipamentos, evaluación de la atención clínica y estado general del recién nacido, procedimientos y atención de enfermeira, lactancia materna y soporte emocional a los padres.
