The history of these regions explains the profusion of translations from the Middle Ages and their in some cases pioneering character, the drop-off in the number of translations from the 16th to well into the 19th century (outside Northern Catalonia and Menorca), the revival during the first few decades of the 20th century followed by further decline during the Franco regime and the stabilisation that is in evidence today.
