| Resumo: | Incorporating digital technologies into our daily lives has created gaps in research based on the study of human actions and relationships. One of these areas is linguistics, which studies language and its use by speakers, from different perspectives. Therefore, this article aims at discussing the adoption of ethnography in linguistic studies focused on language use in virtual environments. For this, we based on Hine's (2000) and Kozinets' (2015) approaches to ethnography in online environments, named, respectively, virtual ethnography and netnography. We also rely on linguists such as Marcuschi (2008, 2010), Xavier (2002, 2015), and Soares (2002), who study digital language productions. We adopted a bibliographic methodology to discuss the ethnographic approaches in linguistic research in online environments. By observing these works, we found that ethnography can subsidize linguistic research that deepens an online community and its language practices. We also noted that this process contributes to the researchers' literacy. |
