| Resumo: | The normative resolutions of the Brazilian universities that guarantee the preferred name of transgender students were an important step in the struggle for recognition of this social group. Institutional policies such as these may compose a broader project, the democratization of higher education in Brazil. In this sense, this paper aims to comment this subject and to analyze the experience in the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), a case of struggle for recognition that results in a set of resolutions. Although insufficient, advances have been important, including the right to a preferred name. This process suggests the possibilities of the Brazilian University to expand rights, contributing to the democratic advance. However, current political struggles do not allow optimism regarding the guarantee of rights and access to citizenship, putting the democratization of spaces such as the University under threat. |
