We leave the exploration of Leonardo Coimbra’s bio-bibliographical aspects, to context some issues about the freedom of religion and the freedom of religious education in this period, by extending some conclusions for the actual debate about this subject.Propomo-nos, neste artigo, explicitar de que forma Leonardo Coimbra (1883-1936) percepcionou a questão da liberdade do ensino da religião na I República Portuguesa (1910-1926), quando, convidado a assumir funções governamentais e tutelando a 30 de novembro de 1922 a pasta do Ministério da Instrução Pública, no 31º governo republicano e segundo governo de António Maria da Silva, defendeu a liberdade do ensino religioso nas escolas particulares. Apresentaremos o pensamento leonardiano sobre a liberdade enquanto reivindicativa de liberdades.
