Description
Summary:This research intends to offer an approximation to the complex name change process that individuals belonging to the transgender community must undergo, as well as an example of it by means of the onomastic stories some transgender individuals from Spain have produced. The analysis of such stories allows us to take both a subjective, attitude-based approach, and an objective one, using the data obtained from the examination of the present lexical content to offer quantifiable results and ratify our informants’ accounts of said processes. The data obtained by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE) also allows for a better characterization of these names regarding their innovative nature and their distancing from the previously available anthroponomic repertoire and helps confirm the role of an individual’s first name as a central tool in the configuration of their identity, making it prone to a generic hyper characterization during the election process.
